Oil Recycling
Information about recycling oil.
The Recycling Process
Did you know that one tonne of recycled paper or cardboard saves approximately:
- 13 trees
- 2.5 barrels of oil
- 4,100 KWH of electricity
- 4 cubic metres of landfill
- 31,780 litres of water
The collected recyclable materials are delivered to a materials recovery facility. Here, technology has transformed the sorting process.
The sorting of collected recyclables is a multi-step process. The materials are placed on a storage pad and then travel along a primary conveyor belt to a pre-sort station where things that clearly shouldn’t be there such as food waste are removed by hand.
From here:
- Steel is removed using a magnet
- Materials continue along a conveyor and through a trommel. This is a large rotating cylinder that sorts by size. The bulk of the containers (glass, plastic and aluminium) fall through the trommel holes with the bulk of the paper travelling through the trommel
- Materials that fall though the trommel holes pass over a vibrating screen to remove fine pieces of glass
- The remaining materials move over an air classifier to separate the lightweight materials, such as aluminium cans and plastic bottles, from the heavier glass materials
- Glass passes through an automatic ceramic detector to remove any small pieces of ceramic that might contaminate the recycling process
- Glass bottles are left behind and conveyed into storage hoppers for delivery to processing plants
- Plastic bottles, cartons and aluminium are then sorted into separate streams and conveyed into storage bays or baled ready for delivery to processing plants
Computer Recycling
Byteback – your free computer recycling solution
Do you have any old and unwanted computers, laptops, monitors, hard drives at home or at the office? Wondering how to dispose of them in a safe and environmentally friendly way?
Enter 'Byteback' – your free computer recycling solution.
Residents are invited to 'do the right thing' and drop off unwanted computer equipment at the Boroondara Transfer Station, 648 Riversdale Road Camberwell.
Once collected, Byteback will recover and recycle all metals, plastics, chemicals and safely dispose of the leftovers.
When dumped in landfill the materials used to make computers can leach into our environment. Importantly, all of the energy and resources that went into their original production are also lost forever.
Byteback offers the opportunity to get rid of the computer knowing that much of the materials will be successfully recycled and not dumped to landfill where they can cause environmental problems.
Byteback is a partnership between the City of Boroondara, EcoRecycle Victoria, Hewlett Packard, KS Environmental and Sims E Recycling.
